GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, supervises a major function of central sterilizing
services or a group of related functions on an assigned shift. Performs
product evaluations, implements new services and exercises judgment in
emergencies and the changing sterilization environment.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises and monitors the functions of decontamination, sterilization,
assembly and distribution of medical instrumentation and supplies.

Resolves problems, responds to emergencies presented by the operating room,
Ambulatory Surgery Center, nursing areas and clinics. Recommends changes,
when appropriate, to alleviate problems as identified.

Schedules and assigns the work of a large technical staff of Central Service
Technician I’s and II’s. Monitors work schedules, leave time, establishes
training schedules and assigns overtime after approval by supervisor.

Assumes functional responsibility for on-the-job training of Central Service
Technician I’s and II’s and conducts inservice meetings. Prepares and provides
an intensive CS Technician training program for all new entry level staff
members.

Monitors productivity in assigned areas according to established standards
and procedures. Responsible for the quality and quantity of output and
insures that Quality Assurance tasks are performed.

Formally evaluates Central Service Technician I’s and II’s, counsels when
necessary, recommends and participates in disciplinary actions if applicable.

Monitors availability of instruments, sterile supplies, linen and reusable
equipment and recommends additional purchases when needed.

Interviews and makes recommendations to supervisor for the hiring of new
employees.

Provides technical information in response to complex and/or technical
questions from in-house medical staff and serves as a technical resource
to other institutions.

Interprets manufacturer specifications for care and handling of instrumentation
and determines proper sterilization techniques.

Coordinates transfer of new surgical instruments and supplies from the
operating rooms and clinic areas to CSS and creates workable plans for
sterilization and maintenance of instruments and supplies.

Advises medical staff, faculty and others concerning policies pertaining
to sterilization and maintenance of sterile supplies.

Monitors equipment performance and initiates requests to management for
major repairs and provides justification for replacement of equipment as
needed.

Prepares production reports, product evaluations, cost comparisons and
utilization reports as assigned. Recommends changes to inventory levels
when appropriate.

Attends weekly management meetings to evaluate new service requests, discuss
policies and procedures and plan for growth and change within the department.

Maintains compliance with safety standards to assure adherence to university,
state and federal codes and regulations. Insures that appropriate documentation
relating to monitoring and work related injuries are filed.

Participates in fact-finding and/or resolution of employee grievances at
step one and assists in resolving personnel problems/concerns.

Reports problems and information of an operational nature to department
management.

Attends (and communicated via in-service education) seminars, conference
and institutes designed to increase personal knowledge of central sterilizing
operations, techniques and standards.

Evaluates requests from other institutions to borrow supplies or instruments
with appropriate follow-up to insure return or replacement.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to maintain a high skill level in sterilization techniques and
advises medical staff and others concerning policies pertaining to sterilization
and the maintenance of sterile products.

Knowledge of the precautions necessary to safely handle trays of sharp
or delicate instrumentation or contaminated equipment and supplies.
-
Knowledge of the mechanical operation of various types of sterilizing equipment
and keeps current with the technological changes in equipment.

Knowledge of unit staffing needs and ability to schedules, assign and direct
the work of lower level technicians.
-
Skilled in all function areas of central sterilizing and possesses the
ability to train Central Service Technician I’s and II’s.

Ability to maintain inventory records, establish quotas and assess ands
analyze ordering of supplies and instrumentation.
-
Knowledge of technical terminology, uses for and physical properties of
medical supply items and equipment including high technology changes in
fiberoptic and laser equipment.

Knowledge of procedures for inspecting instruments and trays for deterioration
and acceptability for use.
CLASS SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Four years central sterilizing services experience including two years
as a Central Service Technician I or equivalent level, or;
-
Certification as a Certified Central Service Supervisor and three years
of experience as a Central Service Technician II or equivalent level;
-
One year of college level physical and natural science courses and three
years of experience as a as Central Service Technician II or equivalent
level.
