Eligibility
  • To be eligible for a professional development grant, a person must be employed in a P&S position (P base) at Iowa State University and must have been employed in a budgeted position for six months continuous service. The employee must meet the qualifications prior to the start date of the activity.
  • Activities funded by this program must have a direct relationship to the employee's specific professional developmental goals and make a significant contribution to the employee's professional development.
  • Support for routine continuing education which is funded by departments or divisions (such as training in the immediate operational aspects of the job) is not a goal of this program. The program does not fund college or university tuition credit activities for which the University's Tuition Grant Program provides support.
  • Continuing education activities funded with professional development grants may include short courses on new developments in a discipline, site visits, and attendance at a series of seminars or workshops, or a professional development aspect of a trip taken for another purpose. Presentations of posters or papers related to professional development goals are activities within the scope of the P&S Professional Development Grant Program. This grant program does not fund the cost of transportation to international sites. Travel within a foreign country may be considered as part of professional development grant.

Guidelines
  • The P&S Professional Development Grant Program expects both the department and the staff member will contribute at least two-thirds of the cost of the professional development activity. The maximum P&S Professional Development Grant amount is $400.
  • The committee’s decision is based on the quality of the grant application and on the quality of the professional development activity. Applicants not receiving a grant in the last three years will be given preference.
  • You are required to submit electronically a brief summary of your activity within thirty days of its completion to receive the professional development grant.

Application Deadlines and Review Procedure
  • A committee of Professional and Scientific employees will review all applications and make final decisions on P&S Professional Development Grants awarded. Because funds for the program are limited, it may not be possible to approve all requests in a given year. You are encouraged to discuss your professional development grant application with your representative on the P&S Professional Development Committee prior to submitting it.
  • Applications must be RECEIVED through AccessPlus by 5:00 p.m. of the established deadline date (October 1 and February 1) to be considered for funding for activities completed or to be completed during the current fiscal year.
