General Class Description

Under general supervision, performs technical work involving the determination of radioactive safety hazards associated with use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Surveys laboratories and installations containing radiation producing materials and equipment for hazards that may be present and advises personnel on follow-up procedures.
  2. Maintains records required for regulatory purposes such as personnel dosimetry, laboratory surveys, instrument calibrations, waste disposal, and isotope shipments and receipts.
  3. Determines and assigns specific type of dosimetry to be used, such as film badges, pocket dosimeters , and TLD.
  4. Maintains and calibrates radiation detection equipment.
  5. Advises personnel in setting up operations where radioactive materials will be used and makes sure that proper requirements have been met, such as personnel protective equipment, posting and labeling, operational procedures, and other protective measures.
  6. Picks up radioactive waste materials and processes and packages them for final disposal.
  7. Advises and assists personnel in the decontamination of laboratories and equipment where excessive radioactivity levels are found.
  8. Tests fume hoods and other air handling equipment for adequate flow rates.
  9. Prepares, packages, and measures radiation levels to assure meeting DOT requirements on local and distant shipments of radioactive and hazardous materials.
  10. Uses specialized instruments to conduct test on work environments for items, such as heat, noise, toxic materials, microwave, and laser radiation.

Class Specifications

  1. Graduation from a two year Health Physics Technician Technical Training program, or
  2. Any combination of post high school education in the physical sciences and work experience from which comparable knowledge can be acquired which totals two years.
