General Class Description

Under general supervision, performs skilled work involving the repair, maintenance, service, and installation of laboratory research and teaching equipment.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Constructs complex laboratory and research equipment from woods, metals, and plastics. 
  2. Repairs and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. 
  3. Rigs and dismantles complex equipment and apparatus for experiments. 
  4. Performs carpentry, plumbing, and painting duties, not of the journeyman level. 
  5. Installs laboratory equipment and apparatus. 
  6. Maintains shop and office supplies. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of equipment and methods used in laboratory and maintenance work.
  2. Knowledge of safe working practices. 
  3. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. 
  4. Ability to read and understand plans and specifications. 
  5. Ability to use and care for tools and equipment essential to maintenance and repair work.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  7. Ability to use proper lifting and bending techniques.

Three years experience in shop related work.
