General Class Description

Under general supervision of a Chief Operator, is responsible for firing and operating boilers and for maintaining the proper level of operation.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Checks all fires and equipment when reporting on duty; cleans boiler, panel and assigned areas. 
  2. Fires boilers to maintain safe and efficient operation; provides functional supervision to and assists Larry Worker and Utility Worker when necessary. 
  3. Records temperatures and pressures on log sheets and maintains proper steam pressure, water level and fuel-air ratio in boilers. 
  4. Remains on firing aisle at all times, unless properly relieved, and completes all assignments from Chief Operator or Assistant Chief Operator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of power plant systems and equipment. 
  2. Ability to make decisions under emergency conditions. 
  3. Ability to read and understand blueprints and operating manuals. 
  4. Knowledge of plant safety and accident prevention measures required for operating and maintaining all heating and power plant equipment. 
  5. Ability to withstand constant high noise, dust, fumes, poor lighting and ventilation, and high temperature levels. 
  6. Ability to lift 50 to 150 pounds. 
  7. Ability to perform mathematical computations. 
  8. Knowledge of the state Hazardous Chemicals Risks Right to Know Act. 
  9. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 
  10. Ability to read and understand blueprints and operating manuals. 

Class Specifications

Three years of experience in Power Plant operation including at least one year of related experience firing fossil-fueled (coal/oil/gas) boilers.
